Aftercare

Have you ever had a really connected, intimate moment with someone? Then five minutes later you're both staring at your phones, somebody's looking for their underwear, and the other person is asking, "Did you lock the front door?" Real life comes back QUICK, but there's something to be said for not rushing straight back into it.

 

Aftercare is just taking a little time afterward to make sure everyone feels comfortable, cared for, and connected. And no, you don't need an elaborate post-intimacy ritual.

 

For some people, aftercare means cuddling for ten minutes. For someone else, it's getting a glass of water, taking a shower together, grabbing a warm washcloth, or laughing about the thing that absolutely did NOT go according to plan.

 

The point isn't what you do. It's creating a softer landing before jumping right back into regular life.

 

Not sure what that looks like for you? Try asking each other:

"Do you want to cuddle or do you need a little space?"

"Can I grab you some water?"

"How are you feeling?"

"Was there anything you really loved?"

"Is there anything you want to do differently next time?"

 

And aftercare isn't only about your partner. If you're enjoying some solo time, give yourself the same consideration. Clean up your toys, grab a cozy blanket, use a favorite body oil or lotion, get some water, and give yourself a few minutes before immediately reaching for your phone or moving on to the next thing.

 

It doesn't have to be serious, complicated, or reserved for especially adventurous nights. It's simply another way to take care of yourself and the person you're sharing the experience with. 

 

Intimacy isn't only about how you start or what happens in the middle. How you leave each other feeling afterward matters too.

 

So next time, don't rush off quite so quickly. Stay close for a few extra minutes, check in, laugh together, get comfortable, and enjoy the part nobody talks about nearly enough.
